Watch Saoirse Ronan in the Trailer for Kevin MacDonald's Apocalyptic How I Live Now
Well, it looks like it’s the end of the world. Again.
With a summer full of This Is The Ends and World War Zs, the apocalypse hardly came as a surprise as zombies, demons and more brought civilization to a screeching halt. So what’s one more end-of-times drama to add to the list?
Well for one, Kevin MacDonald’s (Last King of Scotland) latest flick seems smaller—though still terribly bleak—steering away from the overly theatrical Brad Pitt- and James Franco-starring blockbusters. Adapted from Meg Rosoff’s prize-winning novel, it stars Saoirse Ronan as Daisy, an American girl who goes to stay with distant relatives and falls for Edmond (George MacKay) before a nuclear bomb thrusts England into chaos, turning it into a battleground for survival.
Once you get past the lovey stuff in the first half of the trailer, the film looks like a pretty dark tale that could become the grave apocalyptic thriller fans have been waiting months for. It doesn’t appear as if there’s much hope for Ronan as she treks across the desolate countryside, but the teenage romance seems like it could add a softer touch to a premise otherwise saturated in solemnity. However, something tells us this won’t be anything near a fuzzy feel-good film.
