Watch Christian Bale’s Audition to Play Batman
In a new Ultimate Collector’s Edition of the Dark Knight trilogy being released on Tuesday, new footage has been released of Christian Bale’s audition for the role of the Caped Crusader.
The clip, which is only a minute and a half, reveals some very interesting facts. What first may be obvious is that Bale’s Batman voice was originally toned-down and not as rough as it would initially become.
Also, Bale’s acting partner in the scene is Amy Adams, who is reading the role of Rachel Dawes, which would go to Katie Holmes and eventually Maggie Gyllenhaal. However Adams would go on to star with Bale in two David O. Russell films, The Fighter and the upcoming American Hustle. Also, Adams will still be appearing in a Batman film, as she will be reprising her role of Lois Lane for the Superman vs. Batman film coming in 2015.
The Batman suit Bale wears may also look different, as in the audition, Bale wore the same suit that Val Kilmer wore in Batman Forever. Apparently Christopher Nolan just decided to skip using the nipple suit from Batman & Robin.
However one point that doesn’t get an explanation in the featurette is that Bale mentions a character named Cobb. He could be referencing the character of William Cobb, otherwise known as The Talon, which didn’t make it into the final film. Nolan has shown an affinity for the name Cobb in the past, using it for the name of main characters in both his first film Following and as Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in Inception.
According to Dark Horizons, the new featurettes also discuss that Gary Oldman was originally brought in to play Ra’s Al Ghul, but was then given the role of Commissioner Gordon, and also includes Cillian Murphy’s audition for Batman as well, but Murphy would go on to play The Scarecrow in all three films as well.
