NBC has leapfrogged the traditional TV pilot order and gone straight to ordering an entire 13-episode season of a new Tina Fey-produced sitcom starring The Office’s Ellie Kemper. The single-camera show, produced by Fey and 30 Rock executive producer Robert Carlock, will premiere next fall according to Variety.
The currently untitled series will feature Kemper as a woman who flees a doomsday cult to start life anew in New York. Fey and Carlock will co-write.
“Tina and Robert, who cemented their partnership on 30 Rock, have created a new signature comedy for us that is audacious, emotional and clever,” chairman of NBC Entertainment Bob Greenblatt told Variety. “While tapping into very relatable themes, there isn’t anything like this anywhere else on television. NBC has been their home for many years and we’re so happy that they’ve found another way to push the comedy envelope for us.”
It is often rare for networks to put out a straight to series order for new comedies, though NBC has begun making a habit of it since it ordered 22 episodes of The Michael J. Fox Show’s first season last year.
