Tom Hardy, the actor who notoriously tried to destroy Gotham City as Bane, will play musical legend Elton John in an upcoming biopic, according to Variety.
The film, tentatively titled Rocketman, is not a remake of the 1997 Harland Williams movie RocketMan, but will follow the story of John’s monumental career as a performer, beginning with his early days as a child prodigy.
“Tom is quickly becoming known as one of the world’s most versatile actors, and like others at the top of their craft, he has proven his ability to transform himself completely into the character or subject found in the material,” said Focus Features CEO Peter Schlessel. “We are confident that Tom will embody the physicality and spirit of Sir Elton. This, in conjunction with the creative team led by Michael and Rocket Pictures, will provide the foundation for something that will be a unique cinematic event.”
Elton John is said to be re-recording several of his big hits for the film, which will be directed by Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman on Earth) and provided with an original screenplay by Lee Hall (War Horse). Producers hope to start shooting next year, looking at a 2015 release.
