In 2009 First Lady Michelle Obama did something that shocked the world. While on a family vacation in Arizona, the FLOTUS had the audacity to step off of Air Force One in a tank top, open button-down shirt, sneakers and (not even short) shorts.
And for some reason it was a big deal. This week, during an appearance on BET’s 106 & Park, Obama confessed those bland gray shorts were her biggest fashion faux pas in recent memory, saying, “Sometimes I forget I’m the first lady and I’m running around in shorts.” Her regret seems to be based less on the sartorial choice and more on the “huge stink” it caused in the media. The press immediately latched on and debated whether the outfit was appropriate for the wife of the most powerful man in the free world.
Given that Obama broke out the shorts during the broiling month of August in the desert of Arizona, we don’t see anything wrong with her choice of attire. While we do wish Obama opened up a little more and revealed a truly embarrassing fashion choice from, let’s say, the nightmare decade that was the ‘80s, we can’t blame her for glossing over the question with a safe answer.
