Daily Show Head Writer Leaves for John Oliver's New HBO Show

It looks like Jon Stewart will be losing more than just his Senior British Correspondent next year. After almost 10 years with The Daily Show, head writer Tim Carvell will be leaving Comedy Central to become showrunner on John Oliver’s upcoming talk show on HBO, Variety reports. The gig should be a good fit for the six-time Emmy winner, as the program is said to follow a similar format to The Daily Show but on a weekly schedule.

We first learned of the new series last month, when Oliver announced he’d be departing The Daily Show to host his own program in 2014. This followed a celebrated eight-week stint the comedian spent filling in for Stewart this summer, a performance that evidently left HBO executives very impressed. The network has yet to release a title for the topical comedy, but we think they could certainly do a lot worse than The Weekly Show with John Oliver.
