Okkervil River have released the third installment of their Golden Opportunities mixtape series.
Recorded over the last year, the mixtape serves an autobiographical covers record featuring only songs from the 1980s, the timeframe that Okkervil River’s most recent album The Silver Gymnasium was inspired by.
Writing on his personal blog, frontman Will Sheff said, “We worked these songs up on the road and recorded them during soundchecks, on the radio in Seattle, or at one particularly drunken and celebratory show in a tiny club in Bozeman, Montana. It’s fun doing these solo songs during a tour—sometimes you play them for the audience and sometime they’re the band’s little secret. A last jetlagged solo song was recorded the morning after I came home from Japan.”
Okkervil River also released a new trailer for their short film Down Down The Deep River, about “growing up in small town New Hampshire and a tribute to the science fiction and fantasy adventure films of the ‘80s.” The Kickstarter-funded project was shot in actual places where Will Sheff grew up in Meriden, New Hampshire including his elementary school and the woods near his old house.
