The Spider-man franchise is about to get even bigger (and more profitable)—Sony Pictures announced today that in addition to the upcoming The Amazing Spider-man 2 and planned follow-up The Amazing Spider-man 3, they will also be creating two additional spinoffs in collaboration with Marvel: Venom and The Sinister Six.
These new features, focused on the villains in the Spider-man series, will be created by what Sony is calling a “franchise brain trust” made up of five writers (Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon, and Drew Goddard), two producers (Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach) and Marc Webb. The brain trust is tasked with “expanding the universe for the brand” and “forg[ing] a new legacy in the story of Peter Parker.”
The Amazing Spider-man 3’s expected release is June 10, 2016. Venom and The Sinister Six have not yet been given anticipated release dates. So far, the four Spider-man movies made since 2002 have made $3.2 billion for Sony/Columbia worldwide, making it the most successful franchise in the history of Columbia Pictures.
