All Is By My Side, the biopic based on the pre-Monterey Pop Festival life of Jimi Hendrix, is officially set to show at SXSW this year. Starring André 3000 as Hendrix and directed by John Ridley, the highly anticipated film will finally get its U.S. debut after premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival last September. The synopsis reads: “Jimmy James, an unknown backup guitarist, left New York City for London, England in 1966. A year later he returned — as Jimi Hendrix. All Is By My Side brings authenticity and poignancy to the story of the man behind the legend, and of the people who loved and inspired him.”
Unfortunately, Hendrix’s estate never approved of the biopic’s production and likewise refused to license out any of the guitar hero’s songs for the soundtrack. Instead, the film sees André 3000 singing cover songs of those who influenced Hendrix such as Muddy Waters and The Beatles. SXSW Film will be held March 7-15 in Austin, Texas, where All Is By My Side will premier alongside other films such as The Case of the Three Sided Dream and God Help the Girl.
