The candy company Jelly Belly is known for flavor innovation (see the Mai Tai jelly bean of 1977, or the Pina Colada jelly bean of 1983), and this year, they may have outdone themselves. Jelly Belly has created the Draft Beer Jelly Belly jelly bean, a golden-colored jelly bean that tastes like a hefeweizen.
Editor’s note: My wife is now the happiest person on the planet, as her two favorite things are hefeweizens and jelly beans.
“Usually the factory has a sweet and fruity aroma, but when we’re making this flavor it’s just like being in an ale house,” says Jeff Brown, vice president in charge of manufacturing for Jelly Belly Candy Company, in a press release.
Sadly, the jelly beans are alcohol free. Sigh. But each tiny little bead of hefeweizen is just four calories, so you have that going for you. Look for Draft Beer Jelly Bellies at discerning candy counters after they debut at the Winter Fancy Food Show in San Francisco. Not sure if that food show title is ironic or not.
The company has even gone so far as to suggest a few Jelly Belly “beer cocktail” recipes.
2 Draft Beer + 1 Peach = Beer Sangria
2 Draft Beer + 1 Red Apple = Beer cider
2 Draft Beer 1 TABASCO® = Michelada
