Yesterday, Empire went on a spree of reveals for X-Men: Days of Future Past. For its March issue, the movie magazine has 25 limited edition covers, 11 featuring characters from the “past,” 13 from the “future” and one with director Bryan Singer.
The covers display the usual suspects of Wolverine, Professor X and Magneto but also offer a few first glimpses of Peter Dinklage as Bolivar Trask and Omar Sy as Bishop. Most interesting, perhaps, is the reveal of both the “past” and “future” Sentinels, the mutant-hunting robots that will serve as one of the film’s main antagonists.
The “past” Sentinel should appear relatively familiar to fans of the comic or animated series, despite having a distinct design of its own. It’s certainly a humanoid shape, but still very robotic with purple coloration. The “future” sentinel meanwhile is vastly different—it’s sleeker and modernized, with a more overtly human appearance than its “past” counterpart and has a menacing jet-black color design. It also looks like what might happen to J’onn J’onzz were he left in a toaster for too long.
Another interesting note from the massive Empire reveal is that one of the covers features Anna Paquin as “future” Rogue when, last anyone heard, the character had been cut from the film. That could still be the case—who knows when the covers were shot or if 20th Century Fox is simply cashing in on Paquin’s star power. But if ever there was a hope for Rogue fans everywhere, this may be it.
X-Men: Days of Future Past is set to hit theaters May 23.
