Last night, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis cashed in big with four Grammys, including Best New Artist and Best Rap Album. It was one of the more heated storylines of the night, with many believing that the upstart duo from Seattle didn’t deserve the honor.
In a field that included rap giants Jay Z, Kanye West and Drake as well as talented newcomer Kendrick Lamar, whose debut record Good Kid m.A.A.d City received almost universal acclaim and was many’s favorite to take home Best Rap Album, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis seemed like longshots. Some say Lamar was robbed, including the winner himself.
As Pitchfork pointed out, Macklemore sent Lamar a text after the show, which he then promptly posted to Instagram so everyone could see his feelings on the matter.
The text read:
You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have. It’s weird and sucks that I robbed you. I was gonna say that during the speech. Then the music started playing during my speech and I froze. Anyway, you know what it is. Congrats on this year and your music. Appreciate you as an artist and a friend. Much love
Accompanying the screencapped text was a lengthy caption explaining the artist’s thoughts behind his message. You can read it in its entirety here.
No word as to if Lamar responded to the text. Anyway, you know what it is.
