Watch the New Trailer for James Franco's Adaptation of Child of God

January 22, 2014  |  4:00pm

After screening at both the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals and issuing a teaser last summer, James Franco’s adaptation of the harrowing Cormac McCarthy novel Child of God finally has its first full-length official trailer.

Set in the mountains of Tennessee, Child of God tells the story of Lester Ballard, a violent, mentally ill man who descends to grotesquely primal depths after he is dispossessed of his land. But whereas McCarthy’s prose artfully frames Ballard as a sort of sympathetic refugee of a wasting human culture, Franco’s film, if the heavy-handed trailer indicates anything, appears to assert Ballard as merely a vengeful psychopath that could come from a slasher flick.

Franco’s adaptation, starring Scott Haze as Ballard and Tim Blake Nelson as Sheriff Fate, doesn’t have a release date yet.
