There’s nothing more iconic of Valentine’s Day than the Valentine’s Day heart. The heart has long been symbolic of love and not just romantic love, either. Aristotle believed that the heart was the center of all emotion, while the heart shape as we know it—the most famous symbol of Valentine’s Day—came onto the scene as early as the thirteenth century, though it only became widely popular in the 1500s.
Come mid-January, hearts bedeck our grocery store aisles, pharmacies, malls, classrooms and offices (whether we’re ready for them or not). Despite popular representations of the heart, they’re not reserved to the realm of kitsch, although there’s plenty of great opportunities for whimsy with the heart emblem—look no further than ASOS’s 3D heart headband or Charlotte Olympia’s Be Mine purse. They can be understated, as seen with Kate Spade’s Heart of Gold bangle, or artistic, like the Heart in Bloom Oval Clock.
