Julianne Moore has joined co-star Ellen page in Freeheld, an indie drama based on the Academy Award-winning documentary short from 2007 of the same name. The film will dramatize the true story of Laurel Hester (Moore), a detective from New Jersey who was unable to assign her police pension benefits to her domestic partner, Stacie Andree (Page), when she became terminally ill with cancer.
Zach Galifianakis will play a supporting role as Steven Goldstein, an equality activist, and Peter Sollett (Raising Victor Vargas, Nick & Nora’s Infinite Playlist) will direct. The screenplay was written by Ron Nyswaner, who also wrote Philadelphia. Filming is tentatively scheduled to begin this summer.
