While most of our attention is fixated on Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul, let us not forget that Vince Gilligan is also working on a brand new show for CBS.
Titled Battle Creek, the new show is a police drama set in Michigan based on a script Gilligan wrote for the network 10 years ago. It just took one disrespected man and a whole lot of meth to finally get it on air. Last September, the New York Times reported that CBS promised to produce and air at least 13 episodes, anything beyond that will depend on the success of the show. Joining the Breaking Bad boss is House creator David Shore, who will serve as showrunner.
Deadline had more news yesterday, this time in the form of casting. Kal Penn is reportedly the first actor to be cast in the new drama, reuniting him with Shore. Penn portrayed Dr. Lawrence Kutner on House for two seasons before leaving for a position at the White House. According to Deadline, Penn will play a local detective who is skeptical of the FBI agent that arrives in Battle Creek.
No word yet as to when the series may see actual airtime, beyond “sometime next fall,” but given that we’re in the heart of pilot season, expect more news soon.
