There’s a new Wolfenstein game coming out in May. It’s called Wolfenstein: The New Order. (Sadly Peter Hook is not involved.) There’s also a new Doom coming out at some point in the future. Bethesda Softworks, the publisher of both games, announced today that if you preorder Wolfenstein you’ll get access to an upcoming beta test of the new Doom. This is the year 2014.
Wolfenstein: The New Order is out on May 20 for PC, the Playstation 3, the Playstation 4, the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Doom doesn’t have a release date, and the beta period has not yet been announced. You can find more information here, at a website that could not have existed when you downloaded the shareware versions of the original Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. And what is a beta if not the shareware of the 21st century?
The new Doom was previously known as Doom 4, and is being developed by long-time Doomvelopers id Software. It was also previously known as a troubled production, with well-documented development problems dating back to before a 2011 reboot. Today’s announcement of a future beta test is the first news about the game since Bethesda confirmed it was still being developed in early 2013.
