The Civil Wars’ John Paul White and Joy Williams have been on hiatus since Nov. 2012 due to “irreconcilable discord,” but they’ve still been putting out accumulated material. Last year saw the release of their titular album, the Bare Bones acoustic EP and the four-song vinyl-only EP Between The Bars. The duo announced yesterday the release of Between The Bars digital edition on Facebook, available on iTunes on Feb. 11.

The Civil Wars cover of the late Elliott Smith’s “Between The Bars” was released last fall, 10 years after Smith’s death. Other songs on the EP include Portishead’s “Sour Times,” Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” and The Romantics’ “Talking In Your Sleep.”

Even though The Civil Wars have been doing their haunting violin- and melody-filled rendition of Smith’s “Between The Bars” live for a couple of years now, it’s worth the listen to pay homage to both The Civil Wars and Elliott Smith.

Check it out over at NPR and watch a 2011 version of the song below.
