Watch Jay Leno Pass The Tonight Show Torch to Jimmy Fallon

February 4, 2014  |  7:00pm

Starting Feb. 17, Jimmy Fallon will take over as host of The Tonight Show, and Monday Jay Leno made sure this transition would be remembered as a classy one. In one of his final nights as host, Leno brought Fallon on the show to joke about the future, reminisce about the past and even get a little sentimental.

After some perfunctory Super Bowl talk, the two comedians watched Fallon’s first appearance on The Tonight Show, mocking his stage jitters and ill-fitting suit. But a photo from Leno’s first night on the show proved the young comedian hardly did better, looking, as Fallon said, “like a stylish leprechaun.”

Finally, Jimmy Fallon performed the first Tonight Show rendition of his popular “Thank You Notes” segment. After shooting off a couple quick jokes, Fallon wrote Leno a surprisingly heartfelt note thanking him for “carrying on the proud tradition of the Tonight Show host with such humor and class and for being nothing but gracious and generous to me over the past years,” adding, “I will do my best to make you proud every single night.”
