Let’s be honest here, if Christmas was tomorrow, we’d be pretty psyched. We’ve been taught since we were children that patience is a virtue and good things come to those who wait…but wouldn’t it be cool to open up some shiny packages like, right now?
Deschutes must be on the same page, because they decided to distribute a winter ale before fall even started. Their Jubelale hit the shelves in September. And it has people sledding on the label. Look at them. They’re wearing scarves. They look cold. But happy. Don’t let the fact that the beer is technically “out of season” turn you off. Sure, you’re probably just now digging into all those pumpkin beers, but consider this beer an early Christmas present. The thing should have a bow around it, it’s that damned good.
This “strong ale” pours a deep mahogany, all red around the corners, with a thin head. It smells like biscuits and raspberries, and follows through with an earthy, malty character, but with a thin mouthfeel (this is no stout). At first, you get slight notes of cherry. Show a little bit of patience though, (I know, this is a contradiction) and let it warm, and the cherry really pops. You’ll also start to pull out notes of chocolate. This is what Christmas in October tastes like people. Let’s celebrate.
