The Developer of LittleBigPlanet Debuts First Trailer for Surreal Game Hunger

This is the coolest videogame trailer we’ve seen in a while. Swedish developer Tarsier Studios, the team behind the LittleBigPlanet series, has dropped a first look tease at their new surrealist, suspense-adventure game Hunger. From the start, we’re totally feeling the vibe on this one. The whole concept is like something out of the mind of Tim Burton, with the animation of a Laika studios production. We can imagine that all the creative energy that went into movies like The Corpse Bride, Coraline and ParaNorman collided somewhere beyond the ether and landed at the lap of Tarsier. Now we have been given the opportunity to one day play the result.

In Hunger you will play as a young girl named Six trapped in an underwater labyrinth with monsters looming in the shadows. Your goal will be to escape that labyrinth safely with a minimal amount of monster-to-human contact. There is a really creepy factor to the whole thing, although it doesn’t seem like a game that will rely too heavily on jump scares to get players on the edge of their seats. There will just be a general sense that someone is always walking behind you.

The gameplay is being described as a “hide-and-seek” style. We assume this will involve some level of stealth and tiptoeing around monsters to survive, in a manner similar to something like Amnesia: The Dark Descent. We’re also going to assume that Six will do the majority of the hiding. Tarsier also briefly mentions something called a “Dollhouse Perspective” which sounds creepy all on its own. We have no idea what it means, but we’re eager to find out.

According to the minds behind the game, Hunger “aims to capture the thrill and the terror of being small and weak in a world that isn’t.” The trailer does an amazing job at capturing that exact feeling.

Hunger is still in the early development process. The early gameplay prototype has already been finished, which means we should expect more news on the game shortly. It is set to be released on PC and console. There is no release date announced.
