Leonardo DiCaprio “Ain’t Afraid to Die” in First Trailer for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s The Revenant

“I ain’t afraid to die anymore,” Leonardo DiCaprio rasps. “I done it already.”

The first teaser for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s The Revenant starts at spellbinding, and only gets better from there. DiCaprio’s words are the first and last uttered in the trailer—the rest of the action speaks for itself. You may have to remind yourself to blink while watching.

The Revenant is inspired by the true story of famed explorer Hugh Glass (DiCaprio), who is mauled by a bear and left for dead by his fellow adventurers during an expedition into the uncharted American wilderness. Glass’ struggle to survive and return to his family finds him warring with his former confederate, John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), as well as with the dangers of nature and an unforgiving winter.

The film is directed by the illustrious Iñárritu, who recently reeled in a Best Director Academy Award for his Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay-winning drama, Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). The trailer for Iñárritu’s new film showcases the same kind of virtuoso camerawork that he became famous for with Birdman. Iñárritu co-wrote The Revenant with Mark L. Smith, basing its screenplay in part on a novel by Michael Punke.

The Revenant comes to theaters on Christmas Day. Watch the teaser trailer above. Now.
