The BBC Wants Peter Capaldi to Stay On as Dr. Who, But He’s Not Sure

Back in December, Peter Capaldi seemed to hint that his time on Dr. Who was drawing to a close:

“This could be my final year — it’s terrifying. I love Doctor Who but it can be quite an insular world and I do want to do other things. There will come a time when this is over … But I knew that when I started. I was thinking about my regeneration scene from the outset. That’s my terrible melancholic nature. When you accept the job you know there’ll come a day, inevitably, when you’ll be saying goodbye.”

Today, things look at least a little differently. According to Radio Times, Capaldi has been asked to stay on as the titular character even after current showrunner Steven Moffatt leaves. Chris Chibnall, who made his fame with the excellent Broadchurch, will take over for Moffat, so the show will be in good hands. Capaldi, however, is undecided.

“It’s such a long time before I have to make that decision,” Capaldi said. “Steven’s been absolutely wonderful, so I love working with him. Chris is fantastic, and I think he’s a hugely talented guy…I don’t know where the show’s gonna go then. I don’t know. I have to make up my mind, and I haven’t yet…As Steven will tell you, it’s very difficult to say goodbye.”

Capaldi is the twelfth actor to play Dr. Who. He was originally cast in 2013, and there’s no indication of when he’ll make a final decision.
