Black Panther Director Ryan Coogler Is Also Working on the Movie’s Script

According to Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler won’t just be helming the film about one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most anticipated characters. He’ll be writing for it, too.

Feige revealed that Coogler was one of a “number of writers” penning the script during a recent interview with Collider.

“We have a number of writers on it including Ryan Coogler, who is also directing, he’s working on the draft right now,” Feige said. “Between now and the end of the summer there will be more casting announcements. We start filming at the very beginning of next year.”

The last writer attached to the film’s script was Joe Robert Cole (Amber Lake), though during his interview Feige made no comment on whether or not that had changed.

In addition to his directing duties, Coogler has a writing resume that includes 2013’s Fruitvale Station and Creed. Black Panther will first appear in this year’s Captain America: Civil War before appearing in a standalone movie to be released Feb. 16, 2018.
