Maynard James Keenan’s Authorized Biography is Out in November

Books News

Love or hate his band Tool, frontman Maynard James Keenan is certainly an enigmatic guy, possibly one of the last musicians around with the true outsized personality befitting of a rock star.

Fans and haters alike will get the chance to read more about Keenan’s extremely varied life in A Perfect Union of Contrary Things, his authorized biography, written with friend and co-author Sarah Jensen and published by Backbeat Books. The biography will hit shelves on Nov. 8, with a $29.99 price tag for the hardcover.

According to a release, the book will detail Keenan’s “journey from his Midwest childhood to his years in the Army to his time in art school, from his stint at a Boston pet shop to his place in the international spotlight and his influence on contemporary music and regional winemaking.”

An accompanying four-minute trailer (watch below) expands on these details a bit more, as an animated Keenan watches a slideshow of old photographs over voiceovers from he and Jensen.

“On stage and off, Maynard is a storyteller,” says Jensen in the trailer. “If we listen, we realize that the tale he tells is our own. He’s never been afraid to take the unexpected path and see where it might lead. And he shared the story of that journey with me.”

A Perfect Union of Contrary Things is currently available for pre-order either on the publisher’s website or through Amazon. Perhaps the book will provide a few details on the current status of Tool’s long-awaited fifth album.
