Anton Yelchin’s Death May Have Been Caused by a Defective Jeep Model

Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin died yesterday morning in what has been described as a “freak accident” where his car ran over him after rolling down his driveway, pinning him against a brick pillar attached to the gate of his home. According to the L.A. County Medical Examiner’s Office, Yelchin died of blunt traumatic asphyxia, and the accident was caused by not parking properly.

The car was a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, a model that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recalled in April after a possible transmission issue that made it hard for drivers to tell which gear the vehicle was in. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recalled 1.1 million other vehicles in April for similar issues with the transmission.

In response to Yelchin’s death, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles told The Wrap, “FCA U.S. extends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Yelchin. The company will be conducting a thorough investigation of this tragic incident. It is premature to speculate on its cause at this time.”

According to People the LAPD is still investigating the accident for the cause, and it is unclear if Yelchin’s car was one of those that were recalled.
