Google Announces New Smartphone, Pixel

Tech News Google

Google announced their new phone today, dubbed Pixel.

Pixel will be the first phone made with hardware and software by Google. Pixel has an aluminum case with a glass panel on the back for the fingerprint reader. It runs on Android Nougat and will automatically download and install updates in the background. The phone can charge up to seven hours of battery life on 15 minutes of quick charging. Google made sure to point out that the phone will have a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Google placed a heavy emphasis on how their AI assistant, Google Assistant, works within the phone, saying the hardware was built “with Google Assistant at its core.” Holding the home button or saying “OK, Google,” will bring up the Assistant. You can also hold the home button and swipe up to have the Assistant read what’s on the screen and present you with the relevant information. The Assistant will also be able to interpret your questions based on what is currently on the phone’s screen. Your Google Assistant will be the same across all of your Google devices.

Pixel’s 12.3 megapixel camera was rated by DxOMark, a third-party camera measurement company, at 89, three points higher than the iPhone 7’s, earning the highest rating DxOMark has ever given. The camera had a Smartburst feature which takes a series of pictures and picks out the most clear one. It’ll also have video stabilization. Pixel owners will have free unlimited storage on Google Photos.

Google also mentioned a cord that would make it easy to transfer contacts, photos, videos, music, texts, calendar events and iMessages from your old phone. Every Pixel will come with said cord.

Pixel will work out of the box with Google’s new VR headset, Daydream View.

Pixel will come in two sizes, 5 and 5.5 inches, and in three colors: Quite Black, Very Silver and Really Blue. The phone will cost $649, or $27 a month.

Pixel is available to pre-order starting today. You can see the Google Store page here and read more about Pixel here. Watch Google’s Pixel reveal video below.
