Daily Show News Team to Assemble for Huge Reunion Episode

On Tuesday night, Stephen Colbert mentioned that a Daily Show reunion on his Late Show with Stephen Colbert was in the works, and on Wednesday, he and CBS revealed the details of the forthcoming episode. The special episode will be bringing back Daily Show alums Jon Stewart, Samantha Bee, John Oliver, Ed Helms and Rob Corddry, and will take place on Tuesday, May 9, to coincide with Colbert’s 20th anniversary in late-night television.

A quick glance at the special’s stacked guest list reveals just how pivotal The Daily Show has been to the formation of the current state of late-night TV, launching as it did the careers of several of today’s most-watched comedians. Bee and Oliver, each now heading their own shows, are currently killing it with the satirical news reporting, whereas Helms, following his early-career tenure as a Daily Show correspondent, proceeded to become a staple in film and TV comedy. Corddry’s success story is similar to Helms’, and Stewart, though taking a time off from a strict focus on comedy, is still doing important work via HBO.

Then, of course, there is Colbert himself, who, following his exit from The Daily Show in 2005, proceeded to launch The Colbert Report, whose impact on American late-night comedy has been significant, to say the least. In 2015, he was selected to succeed the legendary David Letterman on The Late Show, where he has recently surged in ratings, building momentum on the back of his deep-seated skill for spinning political ridiculousness into engaging comedy.

All this is to say, the episode on May 9, at 11:35 p.m. EST/PST will be a gathering of giants, as well as a much-warranted acknowledgment of the show that brought them all to where they are.
