Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig Decide Less is More in Full Trailer for Alexander Payne’s Downsizing

Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig make a massive decision to go miniature in the full trailer for Alexander Payne’s Downsizing, a quirky, semi-sci-fi dramedy that is already generating some big buzz. The film premiered at Venice Film Festival in August to rave reviews, and today brings a far better look at it in the form of the above trailer.

Downsizing is named for the medical procedure through which human beings shrink themselves down to just five inches tall, a solution to problems both environmental and economic. Protagonist Paul (Damon) and his wife Audrey (Wiig) decide to bail on their stressed lives and move into a downsized community, multiplying their wealth in the process and bringing about a surreal series of adventures.

Payne, the Oscar-nominated writer-director of The Descendants and Sideways, scripted Downsizing alongside Jim Taylor (Sideways). The film’s surprisingly deep cast also includes Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau, Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Sudeikis, Niecy Nash, Alec Baldwin, Laura Dern, Bruce Willis and character actress Margo Martindale.

Downsizing hits theaters on Dec. 22. Watch the full trailer above and revisit the first teaser here.
