By 1984, English pop-new wavers Duran Duran had emerged as icons of the decade, with an image every bit as important as their sound. Duran Duran embodied the ‘80s pretty-boy hair styles and oozed sex appeal, but also perfected the signature synth-wave pop sound that launched a thousand MTV careers with provocative videos for top hits “Rio” and “Hungry Like the Wolf.”

In November 1983, the band embarked on the Sing Blue Silver Tour, a global trek that continued through mid-1984 and included Duran Duran’s first major arena dates in the U.S. On March 19 and 21, Duran Duran played two sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden, the second night being broadcast on Westwood One radio in New York. While the Sing Blue Silver Tour was meant to promote Duran Duran’s 1983 release Seven and the Ragged Tiger, the group ended up devoting most of the set to their earlier hits. Hear Duran Duran perform “Hungry Like the Wolf” and a 15-minute encore of “Girls on Film,” amidst a sea of screaming young women.
