Still riding the high of his blockbuster smash-hit A Star Is Born, actor Bradley Cooper is in early talks to star in Guillermo del Toro’s forthcoming Nightmare Alley, per reports from Variety.

Sources close to the project report, per Variety, say that Cooper has recently received an offer for the film, and although both parties have been talking, it’s not sure if a deal has been closed. If Cooper makes the deal, he would take the place of Leonardo DiCaprio who passed up on the role after a deal couldn’t be reached.

Straying away from the 1947 Fox-produced Nightmare Alley, del Toro will more so base his film off of the William Lindsey Gresham novel. The 1947 film starred Tyrone Power and Joan Blondell, and was directed by Edmund Goulding. The book details a carny-turned-mentalist at a freak show who climbs the ladder of his profession to cater to the rich and famous.

Del Toro is set to direct the film and co-write the script with Kim Morgan. The director will also finance and produce the film alongside TSG Entertainment’s J. Miles Dale. Set to start shooting this fall, the film will be one of del Toro’s first directorial features since his Academy Award-winning Best Picture The Shape Of Water.
