Sentient Furniture Ruins Young Love in Hot Chip’s “Spell” Music Video

A heated hookup goes awry in the video for “Spell,” the latest single off Hot Chip’s just-released A Bath Full of Ecstasy. The Simon Owens-directed clip doesn’t feature any band members, instead focusing on an attractive couple doing things attractive couples do in bedrooms. That is, until the furniture decides to go all Pee Wee’s Playhouse-but-make-it-murder on the pair.

Here’s a fun fact: “Spell” (video below) was initially intended for Katy Perry’s 2017 album, Witness, but the band saw fit to keep it for themselves. Hot Chip’s seventh album—a nine-track blast of emoti-pop with a shimmery dance sheen—came out last Friday, Jun. 21, making Paste’s list of new albums to stream. The group will tour in support of the LP through the remainder of 2019.
