24 Review: "2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m." and "3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m."
No surprise deaths. No questionable twists. No shocking torture scenes. Nearly all of the standbys we’ve come to expect from 24 over the past eight years were notably absent in the two-hour series finale. Nearly, for the one thing we’ve come to demand since day one remained the driving force ’til the bittersweet end: suspense, the race against time, exploited to near-perfection to go beyond a tale of vigilante-style revenge and government conspiracy and into the realm of something more weighted.... read more
Modern Family Review: "Hawaii" (1.23)
After a string of episodes where we saw Modern Family split into several largely unrelated plots, my favorite thing about last week was seeing everyone together. Not that everyone has to necessarily interact for it to be a good episode, but I’d really prefer not having characters entirely than giving them a C-plot and four minutes of screen time that are largely wasted. The show tends to feel short as it is and necessitating a minimum of three different foci for each episode just cuts into valuable time—there’s never been an episode of the show that I wouldn’t enjoy seeing... read more
24 Review: "1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m." (Episode 8.22)
In the years I've been watching 24, I can't ever recall being treated to such a lean, mean dosage of engaging back-to-back hours as the grouping of episodes leading up to the series finale (which airs next Monday at 8 p.m.). Say what you will about this season—the Dana Walsh/Jenny Scott storyline is certainly one blemish keeping Day 8 from achieving top-tier status—but since Renee Walker's murder six weeks ago, something new and fresh has emerged. And not just in regards to 24. Simply put, these hours comprise what has to be the greatest, bloodiest tale of revenge ever... read more

24 Review: "12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m." (Episode 8.21)
"There are no good guys here." Perhaps not, but while Cole Ortiz may be jaded by the players involved, as evidenced by a brief conversation with Chloe O'Brian in last night's shocking episode, I can't help but think these past couple hours of 24 are the baddest this season, if not the entire series. Bad in the good way—in the way we watch good people turn bad and bad guys influence the good. Strange that a show normally so clear on the Good vs. Evil motif is ending on such a deliciously messy buffet of food for thought, while ABC's... read more
The Pacific Review: "Part 8" (1.08)
This week’s chapter begins with an epilogue on the American victory at Peleliu, and it ends with the invasion of Iwo Jima—twelve minutes of the most intense and emotional battle scenes of the series so far.... read more
The Pacific Review: "Part 7" (1.07)
The battle on Peleliu Island continues. The Marines have captured the airfield but now must root out Japanese soldiers holed up in an elaborate scheme of more than 500 caves—something U.S. Intelligence knew nothing about. It’s grueling work, a campaign that would last 30 days, around-the-clock. It’s October, 1944.... read more
The Pacific Review: "Part 6" (1.06)
It wouldn’t be unusual, and even a little understandable, for viewers of The Pacific to change channels during the HBO series’ graphic battle scenes, with their vivid reenactments of Marines being torn apart by enemy fire. Detached limbs, gaping wounds and copious amounts of blood can take a psychological toll. But that’s the point—by taking us as close to the events as possible, short of actually being there, we better understand the emotional impact the battles are having on the men.... read more
The Pacific Review: "Part 4" (1.04)
Now working as an intelligence scout for the 1st Marine Division, Leckie accompanies his fellow troops in the invasion of Cape Gloucester, New Britain (located in the South Pacific, despite its name) the day after Christmas. They again encounter Japanese resistance. In describing the outnumbered enemy’s relentless attacks one private calls them “incredibly brave or incredibly stupid,” to which Leckie replies, “Or they just really fucking hate us.”... read more

Robocop to be reinvented by Darren Aronofsky
For the past several weeks, it's been floating around that Darren Aronofsky would be taking over Robocop and restarting the franchise. Frankly, we were too skeptical about the whole thing to report on it, since the whole thing sounded more like rumor than fact. But as strange as it sounds, it is indeed true. With David Self (Road to Perdition) writing the screenplay, the new Robocop movie is being fast-tracked for release in 2010.... read more
New Weezer/Rivers Cuomo material coming in November?
While putting the finishing touches on The Red Album and kicking off a tour to support it, Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo has been working on a side project of his own. Using YouTube to send videos to his fans, the singer has let folks submit every part of a new song from its chords to lyrics. The whole thing has been getting closer to completion after four months of work and, honestly, starting to turn out a really catchy power-pop song. When he wants to, that Cuomo knows his stuff. ... read more
