The Who plots covers album, plays for a cause

In February, we reported that a new Who album was in the works, full of tracks that harkened back to a better time, a simpler time, when The Who was, well, The Who. Just this morning it was announced that the band will be doing an album of Motown covers. Wait a minute, weren’t the Who supposed to write new material for this one? Well, Pete Townshend might still write some. But the rock legends will mainly cover R&B classics, many of which they believe audiences might not even be familiar with yet. “We’re digging through lots of material and...  read more

The Sexy Tour, actually. Gaffigan is a self-proclaimed tall, pale, married father of two with a bit of a belly. Why, then, The Sexy Tour? Is he referencing the material, or himself? Or is he just being ironic? Well, he actually met up with himself to ask those exact questions and recorded the interview on his MySpace blog. As always, the show will be clean and...  read more

Recently, the 10th anniversary of Neutral Milk Hotel's masterpiece, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, came and went. To celebrate, Pitchfork republished an old interview with Jeff Mangum online. Here at Paste, we'd like to wish the album a belated Happy Birthday, and give fans a present. A group of friends and artists from Atlanta and New York began a collaborative...  read more

Daniel Day-Lewis April Fool's Joke

image not available

Ladies and gentlemen, if I say that this is crazy news, it's because the following news item was an April fools joke by Slashfilm that got us (and a lot of other film sites) hook, line and sinker: /Film reported [on April 1... hmmmm] that Daniel Day-Lewis had signed on to play the title role in director Peter Weir’s (Master and Commander, The Last Wave) an upcoming remake of Werner Herzog’s classic Fitzcarraldo. Herzog himself was to produce the film, which would've been enough to placate remake-phobes, and Mick Jagger, who was originally slated to star in the 1982...  read more

Kids in the Hall announce 2008 tour

image not available

You could be forgiven for wondering if it's 1994 all over again, what with acronymed acts like NIN and STP headlining festivals, Weezer releasing an album called Weezer and an X-Files movie on the (event) horizon. But of all the '90s-redux goodies coming up in '08, perhaps the most unexpected—and therefore exciting—one is the (very) quietly announced Kids in the Hall reunion tour, which kicks off this Friday, April 4, in Indiana. In case the words "I'm crushing your head," "terrier song," "my pen," "the bass player," and a spot of live-action Peanuts dancing don't bring the memories flooding back,...  read more

Steve Martin and Diane Keaton to star in One Big Happy

image not available

Diane Keaton might have been a bit disappointed that she didn’t get stolen for the American Apparel ad campaign, but she has much greater things to look forward to now that Paramount Pictures has cast her and Steve Martin for One Big Happy. That’s right—the endearing suburbanite couple from the Father of the Bride films will be reunited in a comedy about overcoming (what else) familial difficulties. Although closely related to the core scheme of Father of the Bride I and II, one would hope that if Paramount paid six figures for it, then it would offer audiences something new....  read more

Paste presents: Romantica and The Bittersweets on tour

Once upon a time, a moderately well-known band named Luna released a moderately well-received album entitled Romantica. The album was released back in 2002, and happened to hit stores the same year that the best damn music magazine out there began publication. Two years later, the gorgeously named album inspired singer/songwriter Ben Kyle, an Irishman-cum-Midwesterner, to name his just-formed band Romantica. Three years later, Paste, the magazine birthed the same year as Romantica the album, named the band Romantica's sophomore effort America as number 58 of its Top 100 Albums of 2007. Was it fate that things came in...  read more

Weezer releases name, date of sixth album

Drumroll, please... The name of the new Weezer album will be…Weezer!? Indeed, now half of the band’s six studio albums are self-titled. Of course, this information was released on a certain Foolish day recently, so maybe Weezer is just messing with us. Either way, Weezer (the third) will be released June 17 on the band’s Geffen label. According to Billboard.com, frontman Rivers Cuomo has described the songs, produced by Rick Rubin, as "dark and deep and beautiful," and "definitely more sophisticated and adventurous. You'll hear very long songs ... and non-traditional structures." By "adventurous," one might assume Cuomo is referring...  read more

Not to mention the lads are going rogue after splitting with their former label, 679, in 2006. Now all releases will be through their own...  read more

Woody is angry: American auteur sues American Apparel

American Apparel, those purveyors of so many solid-colored, jersey-knit garments, have managed to anger the king of the neurotic comedy. Woody Allen filed a lawsuit Monday against the clothing line for using an image of him dressed as a rabbi from his film Annie Hall in an ad, asserting that he had given no permission for the usage. The billboard sports a still from the movie, accompanied by the Yiddish for "the holy rebbe" and the American Apparel logo. The Associated Press reports Allen wants at least $10 million in compensatory damages and unspecified punitive damages for the the unauthorized...  read more
