Cabbagetown Chomp and Stomp Chili Cook-Off and Bluegrass Festival gets tasty tomorrow
[Above: Festival-goers and vendors at 2007's Chomp and Stomp.] Every year, two things that seem naturally predestined to live side-by-side join forces in Cabbagetown: Large vats of chili and healthy helpings of bluegrass music. From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8 festival-goers can relish the perfect pairing at the Cabbagetown Chomp and Stomp, which meshes a competitive chili cook-off with live bluegrass music for the sixth year running. In order to better understand this fortuitous mashup of culinary and aural euphoria (not to mention a morning 5k run), Paste got some more details from John Dirga, music coordinator... read more
Live Review: Deerhunter, Pylon, Jay Reatard and Times New Viking @ Variety Playhouse; The Spooks, Cola Freaks and Mourdella @ Star Bar, 10/31/08
[Above: Jared Swilley of the Black Lips plays in Halloween-appropriate band The Spooks.]More good bands than Bonnaroo. The release of a long-awaited record. A 3-D extravaganza. A horde of crazed Danes. A theremin. A cassette so limited it doesn’t really exist. The Black Lips wearing bed sheets. And Jay Reatard playing (gasp) an acoustic guitar. It’s just another Halloween in Atlanta, as Deerhunter headed a line-up of hipster-approved indie rockers at the Variety Playhouse, while Black Lips side-project The Spooks descended upon the after-party at Star Bar, supported by a cadre of local bands and the aforementioned Danes.... read more

ATL students rap like T.I.: "You can vote however you like"
Hip-hop and presidential politics: two great tastes that taste great together. Sure, we already know that most rappers are firmly in the tank for Obama, but in the weird pop-cultural bouillon that has been the election season it was only a matter of time before they flipped the keys, as the canny Nasir Jones put it. The students of Atlanta's Ron Clark Academy have done just that with a little song-and-dance number about the 2008 election that's already spreading like wildfire across the grassy plains of the interwebs.... read more

Catching Up With... It's Elephant's
It's been a big year for It's Elephant's. The band released its first full-length, Little Trouble In Chinatown, in April (for free) and recording has already commenced on a follow-up. Somehow, between various local shows-- including performances at Atlantis, Corndogorama, Grant Park Summer Shade Festival and a session with HaveYouHeard.net-- the band had time to create a very special Halloween gift for their fans, which involved a trip to a Civil War cemetary that's reportedly oozing with paranormal activity. Paste recently talked with the band-- vocalist Brent Jay, vocalist/percussionist Garrett Range, vocalist/keyboardist Matt Compton and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist David Fountain-- about touring,... read more
All the Saints: Fire On Corridor X
Noise rules on local-via-Alabama band's debutThis Ben H. Allen-produced debut hits upon a few rock touchstones du jour: squall, feedback, sharp edges so muddled by sonic ballast they blur, warp and peel like paint succumbing to humidity. But unlike many of their contemporaries, All the Saints' use of noise is more an exception than the rule. Only the album's brief, velvet-clad intro piece, “Shadow, Shadow,” suggests the band is no more than the latest act to re-discover My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. But bleeding into the swirling, psychedelic stomp-and-howl of “Sheffield,” the opening minute of peace and haze is nullified entirely. ... read more
