Portlandia Review - "Baseball" (Ep. 1.06)
This week’s “Baseball” episode marked the sixth and final installment of the IFC’s short-run sketch comedy series Portlandia, with Saturday Night Live’s Fred Armisen and Sleater-Kinney guitarist Carrie Brownstein playing a cast of motley characters in the Rose City. (It’ll be back next year with a double order of episodes.) The episode bounced back after last week’s terrible “Blunderbuss,” but it still wasn’t an out-of-the-park home run.... read more
Californication Review: "Lights. Camera. Asshole" (Episode 4.08)
In “Lights, Camera, Asshole,” we find Hank caught in the crossfires his usual antics once again in an entertaining, but relatively superficial episode. Sasha is back on board thanks to Eddie Nero and Fucking and Punching seems to be moving full steam ahead. Not only that, but Sasha has asked for Hank to “polish her dialogue” on her upcoming blockbuster zombie-cop action thriller sequel. Hank’s a skeptic as always—until he learns that the one-week gig will reap a nice little paycheck of $100,000.... read more

Community Review: "Intro to Political Science" (2.17)
For all of its focus on growth and change, Community has tended to shy away from all but the most temporary sexual relationships. The first season had its somewhat awkward will they/won’t they dynamic between Jeff and Britta, and the second season has had Shirley and Chang’s one night stand, but nothing has stuck and everyone has stayed either alone or, in the case of Shirley, with their significant other largely off camera.... read more

Shameless Review (1.07)
There’s a “finders-keepers” mentality among the Shameless residents of Chicago’s projects. So, when a meat packer’s truck breaks down and the driver leaves to get help the neighbors “help” themselves to the beef, and soon everyone’s barbecuing. To these people it’s not thievery. It’s survival.... read more

Archer Review: "Pipeline Fever" (2.4)
Imminent ecological disaster? No problem. Sterling Archer is on the case. This week’s episode of Archer sees Sterling and Lana sent to New Orleans to stop an eco-terrorist from bombing a gas pipeline; a misguided move that would actually end up destroying the ecosystem of the swamp. The good news, Sterling is back to his old ways, caring far more about taking a vacation and living out his Burt Reynolds-in-White Lightning fantasy than saving the wetlands. The better news, that’s an awesome fantasy. I mean, air boats? They’re awesome.... read more
Ricky Gervais Show Review: "Kidneys" (2.6)
For a long period of time, there were questions as to whether or not Karl Pilkington, at least the version of him played on radio, was real or simply a comedic invention of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. His particular brand of idiocy seems related to the David Brent and Andy Millman characters that Gervais plays on his shows, and at times Pilkington is so over-the-top that it’s impossible not to wonder how much of what he does is real. By now, though, I think even doubters have to admit that he’s genuine, not just from An Idiot Abroad but... read more
Community Review: "Intermediate Documentary Filmmaking" (2.16)
After last week’s much more traditionally sit-com-y episode, “Intermediate Documentary Filmmaking” returns us to the strange and wonderful world of Community’s genre parodies. But while in the past these parodies have tended to overpower the rest of the episode, making it so that the zombies or whatever are more important than the show’s continuity, here we get the inverse. The episode is formally parodying the faux-documentary style of other TV shows, in particular The Office, but the focus is really on Pierce’s relationship with the rest of the study group.... read more
