True Blood Review: "You Smell Like Dinner" (Episode 4.02)
True Blood’s biggest weakness has always been the writing, with its strengths being in the characters, aesthetic and world of Bon Temps. That’s what made Season One so damn enjoyable. Despite the fact that the acting was B-movie (on purpose) and the plot wasn’t by any means profound, it was a unique and interesting world to get lost in. But as the show progressed, the writers tried to expand on this universe—with mixed results.... read more

Futurama Review: "Ghost in the Machines" (6.16)
Last week I mentioned that the first two episodes of this season had picked up the pace from last season (or half season, as it may be) and given us a pair of rather ambitious episodes. For week two, we settled in on a more ordinary episode of Futurama. That being said it still heavily involved ghosts and explored a weird aspect of the show we’ve never seen before. But because it stuck around the Planet Express office and didn’t feature new characters, it still felt like it was pretty ordinary, which is one of the best things about the... read more

True Blood Review: Season 4 Premiere ("She's Not There")
True Blood is part fantasy and part melodrama, but it’s the show’s small-town Louisiana characters which have kept it engaging through three seasons, using vampires, werewolves and other creatures of the night to explore prejudice, addiction and corruption. Season 4 returns us to Bon Temps after the initial escape from fairy land.... read more

Futurama Review: "Neutopia" and "Benderama" (6.14/6.15)
Now that we’re back for either the second half of Futurama’s sixth season or, according to its DVDs, the beginning of its sixth season, it seems like a good time to take accounting of the show’s rebirth. Well, its second rebirth, after the four straight-to-DVD movies that took the place of its fifth series. However you want to look at it, though, season six was its most inconsistent season so far. There were a few instant classics such as “The Late Philip Jay Fry”, “That Darn Katz”" and “The Prisoner of Benda,” but there were also far more fine-but-forgettable episodes... read more

Watch a Promo for Ricky Gervais' New Show
The original office funnyman Ricky Gervais is working on a new show called Life’s Too Short, and to promote it, the actor has released a new teaser that’s, uh, less than informative. After having some trouble with a stagehand, Gervais introduces the show’s star, Warwick Davis, as well as co-writer Stephen Merchant. He also calls the faux-documentary show a “cross between The Office and Extras.” That’s pretty much all we get. Luckily BBC had a little more to say, revealing that Davis, a dwarf who has acted in Harry Potter and Star Wars, will play a “fictional version of himself.”... read more

Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore stopped by Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night to play a couple songs from his latest solo effort, Demolished Thoughts. The noise rock veteran performed “Circulation” on the show, complete with a violinist and harpist to back him up. Moore also performed the mellow jammer “Blood Never Lies” as a web exclusive. As if bringing just one legend on the show wasn’t enough for Fallon, Hüsker Dü’s Bob Mould also came on the show to play a short tune with The Roots and promote his new autobiography, See A Little Light.... read more
