Black Sites and Gray Areas: In defense of Kathryn Bigelow and Zero Dark Thirty

Black Sites and Gray Areas: In defense of Kathryn Bigelow and Zero Dark Thirty

Historical fiction is perilous ground for filmmakers, even if you’re a big-name director (see: Stone, Oliver), with critics ever eager to pounce on any factual elasticities. Kathryn Bigelow herself has found no shortage of detractors. Stephen Hunter of the Washington Post complains that the director “gets stuck in a no man’s land between the real and the fictional,” while in a somewhat friendlier piece, the Long Island Press notes that “Bigelow, the only female action thriller director around, is one tough chick with a camera.”... read more

The (Other) Best Movie of 2012

The (Other) Best Movie of 2012

Certainly the strangest entry in the case files of Film 2011-12 is The Case of the Delayed, Chopped, Restored, and Overlooked Masterpiece. Kenneth Lonergan’s long-awaited follow-up to You Can Count on Me looked like ti would be released as early as 2007, but a long and extended wrangling (and legal battle) between Lonergan and Fox Searchlight led to a long delay for the film. Eventually Martin Scorsese and his longtime editing partner Thelma Schoonmaker helped cut a 150 minute version, which was released in theaters last year to mixed reviews. By the time Lonergan’s preferred three-hour cut was relased (on... read more

Catching Up With: Dennis Christopher

Catching Up With: Dennis Christopher

“Follow your bliss," said Joseph Campbell famously, "and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls.” For Dennis Christopher it’s always been about the love – and for Christopher, following his bliss was a one-way ticket to England. “I was under the spell of a woman who would weave these incredible tales about Europe,” Christopher recalls, “The only thing I ever wanted to be, besides an actor, was a hippie, and I thought I could chase it down in Europe. So I followed her.”... read more

Catching Up With Daniel Gillies

Catching Up With Daniel Gillies

Casual fans may know Daniel Gillies best for his role in The Vampire Diaries, but _Paste_readers will also recall that he’s the mastermind behind the indie film Broken Kingdom (which he wrote, directed, produced, and co-starred in) and the making-of-film turned state-of-indie-film-meditation Kingdom Come (for which he was a producer and the main subject). He sat down with us recently to discuss both films, as well as his television career, the films of Richard Linklater and Ang Lee, and why his wife Rachael Leigh Cook is like an old Italian man.... read more

Catching Up With Emily Best of Seed&Spark

When Paste last checked in with Emily Best, she was producing Like the Water, an independent film starring Caitlin Fitzgerald. Inspired by some of the experiences making that film, Best and two of her Like the Water co-conspirators, director Caroline Von Kuhn and first assistant director Liam Brady, decided to create Seed & Spark, a new platform that would combine crowdfunding and crowdbuilding. In the midst of preparations for their Dec. 1 launch, Best took a few moments to explain it all to Paste.... read more

Todd Oldham Talks Designing the 2013 Sundance Merchandise Line

Todd Oldham Talks Designing the 2013 Sundance Merchandise Line

Designer Todd Oldham was always a big fan of the Sundance Film Festival. But he felt that the design of the merchandise never quite matched the courage and iconoclasm of the rest of the festival. This year he decided to do something about it, overseeing the design of the entire line. He sat down with Paste recently to talk about the collection, some of his favorite Sundance movies, and whether his parents really loaned him $100 to buy material for his very first collection.... read more

Catching Up With Zoe Kazan

Catching Up With Zoe Kazan

Zoe Kazan has what you might call a pedigree. Her parents are the playwrights/screenwriters Nicholas Kazan (Frances, Reversal of Fortune) and Robin Swicord (Little Women, Memoirs of a Geisha), and of course her grandfather is one of the greatest directors in film history, three time Academy Award winner Elia Kazan. Unlike the scions of many connected families, though, she’s used her connections and heritage to build a fascinating and weighty career, as a playwright, an actor of theater and film, and this year as a screenwriter. Kazan sat down with Paste recently to discuss her film Ruby Sparks, now... read more
