Broadway Books To Publish Iggy Pop Biography

Hot on the heels of The Stooges’ latest LP The Weirdness, released Tuesday, Random House imprint Broadway Books will publish what promises to be the definitive biography of the “Godfather of Punk.” Complete with more than 70 photos, Iggy Pop: Open Up and Bleed is the third nonfiction book by Paul Trynka, former editor of Mojo Magazine. The biography will hit shelves everywhere April 10 in anticipation of Iggy’s 60th birthday on April 21. Perhaps the only thing more remarkable than The Stooges still cranking out records is the fact that Iggy lived to be 60. If ever there were...  read more

My Morning Jacket’s Rock ’n’ Roll High School

For the first night of its March 6-7 “Prom” at Athens, Ga.’s 40 Watt Club, My Morning Jacket donned some new evening jackets—pastel-colored ones, with matching pants, ruffled shirts and, in keyboardist Bo Koster’s case, a top hat. Oh, and at least for the first few songs, silver plastic pompadour wigs. Opening with a note-perfect cover of The Dells’ 1956 doo-wop hit “Oh, What A Night”—basically the title track for the two-night stand, dubbed “Oh What A Night Under The Sea”—the Jacket performed a set heavy on tracks from their latest studio recording Z before a tightly packed room, most...  read more

BNL Commemorate eMusic's 100-Millionth Download

image not available

When Moorestown, N.J., native and aspiring visual artist Michael Brennan downloaded “Diamond Ring” from bluesman Mississippi Fred McDowell in December, he had no idea he’d just made history. Unbeknownst to everyone but the head honchos at eMusic, the world’s largest retailer of independent music and second-largest digital music retailer after iTunes, Brennan had downloaded the site’s 100-millionth song. As thanks for the milestone purchase, eMusic then enlisted multi-platinum rockers Barenaked Ladies to memorialize Brennan in the only way they know how: with his very own song. Beginning today, the surprisingly catchy “Michael Brennan” will be available for download on eMusic...  read more

Ladyhawk Discusses Mini-Album, Mega-Tour

image not available

Last time Canadian rock quartet Ladyhawk made an album, it had to record the material twice. The first take was a low-budget rush job cut live off the floor in an attempt to recreate the band’s frenetic performing style. Unhappy with the end product, the four musicians then headed back to the studio and re-recorded their eponymous debut from scratch, a decision that pleased both lead guitarist Darcy Hancock and his steadily growing fan base. “[Jagjaguwar Records] said they’d put it out the way it was, but we weren’t really happy with it the first time around,” Hancock says. “It...  read more

See Modest Mouse

Modest Mouse fans have a mere 18 days left before We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank hits stores, but the overeager can satisfy their Mouse cravings by watching the video for the first single, “Dashboard,” here. In keeping with the nautical theme of the album’s title, the video features a tall-tale involving frontman Isaac Brock as a sea-faring captain, a big boat, a bigger fish and a microphone instead of a hook. It makes sense when you see it. Sort of. Around the time the album comes out on March 20, be sure to be on the lookout...  read more
