Glee Creator Ryan Murphy Developing Horror Series for FX

Before he created a musical television show about a high school glee club, Ryan Murphy was penning tales of masochism and vanity for his FX series, Nip/Tuck. Murphy, along with Nip/Tuck and Glee collaborator Brad Falchuk, is reportedly returning to FX once again with a pilot for a series called American Horror.... read more

Shameless Review (1.07)

Shameless Review (1.07)

There’s a “finders-keepers” mentality among the Shameless residents of Chicago’s projects. So, when a meat packer’s truck breaks down and the driver leaves to get help the neighbors “help” themselves to the beef, and soon everyone’s barbecuing. To these people it’s not thievery. It’s survival.... read more

Californication Review: "The Recused" (Episode 4.07)

Californication Review: "The Recused" (Episode 4.07)

After last week’s episode concluded with Abby seducing Hank despite firing the writer, “The Recused” opens with Hank and Abby the morning after facing with a new dilemma. “We had sex, you made me cum,” Abby straightforwardly says. “now we have a serious conflict.” Abby had offers to take Hank back as a client, on the one condition she can’t continue to have sex with him, despite Hank’s hardest attempts to persuade her otherwise. Since he can’t have his cake and eat it too, he opts for sex and a new lawyer.... read more

Portlandia Review: “Blunderbuss” (Episode 1.05)

Episode 5 of Portlandia, IFC’s hipster-skewering series, featured a number of guest appearances, including actress Selma Blair, director Gus Van Sant, and musicians James Mercer (The Shins, Broken Bells), Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney), and and Colin Meloy and Jenny Conlee of Portland’s hometown heroes The Decemberists.... read more

Archer Review: "Pipeline Fever" (2.4)

Archer Review: "Pipeline Fever" (2.4)

Imminent ecological disaster? No problem. Sterling Archer is on the case. This week’s episode of Archer sees Sterling and Lana sent to New Orleans to stop an eco-terrorist from bombing a gas pipeline; a misguided move that would actually end up destroying the ecosystem of the swamp. The good news, Sterling is back to his old ways, caring far more about taking a vacation and living out his Burt Reynolds-in-White Lightning fantasy than saving the wetlands. The better news, that’s an awesome fantasy. I mean, air boats? They’re awesome.... read more

Ricky Gervais Show Review: "Kidneys" (2.6)

Ricky Gervais Show Review: "Kidneys" (2.6)

For a long period of time, there were questions as to whether or not Karl Pilkington, at least the version of him played on radio, was real or simply a comedic invention of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. His particular brand of idiocy seems related to the David Brent and Andy Millman characters that Gervais plays on his shows, and at times Pilkington is so over-the-top that it’s impossible not to wonder how much of what he does is real. By now, though, I think even doubters have to admit that he’s genuine, not just from An Idiot Abroad but... read more

Community Review: "Intermediate Documentary Filmmaking" (2.16)

Community Review: "Intermediate Documentary Filmmaking" (2.16)

After last week’s much more traditionally sit-com-y episode, “Intermediate Documentary Filmmaking” returns us to the strange and wonderful world of Community’s genre parodies. But while in the past these parodies have tended to overpower the rest of the episode, making it so that the zombies or whatever are more important than the show’s continuity, here we get the inverse. The episode is formally parodying the faux-documentary style of other TV shows, in particular The Office, but the focus is really on Pierce’s relationship with the rest of the study group.... read more

IBM artificial-intelligence program Watson successfully accomplished its objective this week by defeating Jeopardy! legends Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Watson, who possesses a baffling 15-trillion byte memory filled with category upon category of Jeopardy! knowledge, clearly have plenty of space in his databank take on some more challenges. Modern Family Review: “Princess Party” (Episode 2.15)

Modern Family Review: “Princess Party” (Episode 2.15)

Stunt casting is always a double-edged sword, and this week’s episode of Modern Family had not one, but two, special guest appearances: an almost unrecognizable Shelly Long as the ex-matriarch of the Pritchett clan, and Matt Dillon, as Claire Dunphy’s (Julie Bowen) high school boyfriend.... read more

Shameless Review: "Killer Carl" (1.06)

Shameless Review: "Killer Carl" (1.06)

The tone of “Killer Carl” plays a tad more sober than previous episodes, but is perhaps necessary to further highlight Frank’s inhumanity as a father. He continues his residency at the Jackson household—the other dysfunctional family—where Sheila dotes on him while her daughter Karen calls him “Daddy Frank”. Real dad, Eddie, lives in the basement now and partakes in family meals while making snide comments about Sheila who, in turn, treats him with venomous hatred. The reason for the disdain of the family patriarch still remains a mystery, as does Frank’s pitiful disregard for his own children.... read more

Californication Review: "Lawyers, Guns and Money" (Episode 4.06)

In last week’s episode, “Freeze Frame,” viewers were left with a parting image of Sasha and Mia’s hands down Hank’s unzipped pants. An L.A. partygoer captured that moment on camera, sharing it across the Internet. After Hank seemed in the clear with a plea bargain lined, the writer could not have messed up at a more inopportune time. As Season 4 continues, it’s baffling how often Hank gets himself in dire straits. Hank’s tragic flaws are the heart of the show, but it’s increasingly difficult to watch him mess up time and time again.... read more
