			Atlanta
[Above: Baby Shakes play the first night of the Atlanta Mess-Around.]

Though the three Atlanta labels behind the two-day Atlanta Mess-Around have released a diverse array of music, their punk and power pop offerings have evolved into the unquestionable centerpieces of the scene, as evidenced by the Mess-Around's line-ups: The second night would boast a strong pop sensibility, but the first was almost all about punk rock.

This Tuesday, Nov. 18, Mastodon fans will be able to wrap their giant tusks around a vinyl box set of the Atlanta band's entire discography. Hitting stores via Relapse Records, the collector's edition will be limited to a one-time, 1,000-copy pressing, complete with nine 180-gram LPs spanning the group's entire career, including the final vinyl pressing of the band's debut EP, Lifesblood, as well as covers of songs by the Melvins, Thin Lizzy and Metallica. Bonus swag includes an embroidered logo patch and a custom Mastodon turntable mat.

Catching Up With... Noot d' Noot

[Above: Noot d' Noot performs outside Criminal Records this year on Record Store Day.]

After a busy summer with the International Hits release of their first album/mixtape Goofer Dust, followed by a short stint up the east coast in September, the crazy collective of Noot d' Noot is back to playing shows and writing new music in Atlanta. Paste:Local recently sat down with four of the eight-to-ten band members, the interchangably named Bimbi Garraux, Dream Sanitation, Dr. Kinje and Circuit Diva (or was that Electro Siren?). And while we're still a little confused about who's called what and why, we now understand a little better how the band morped from a simple side project to one of the best live acts in town.

Live Photos & Review: AIDS Wolf, Vera Fang, Thy Mighty Contract @ The Earl 11/6/08

| | Comments (0)
[Above: AIDS Wolf's Chloe Lum]

It would be easy to call last Wednesday at the Earl a theme night: All three bands were intentionally loud and messy, all three led by female singers (none of whom played an instrument, the star-shaped tambourine wielded by Vera Fang's Zopi Kristjanson) and all three women gripped the microphone alone and howled into the audience. But that's where the similarities stopped.

Cabbagetown Chomp and Stomp Chili Cook-Off and Bluegrass Festival gets tasty tomorrow

| | Comments (0)
[Above: Festival-goers and vendors at 2007's Chomp and Stomp.]

Every year, two things that seem naturally predestined to live side-by-side join forces in Cabbagetown: Large vats of chili and healthy helpings of bluegrass music. From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8 festival-goers can relish the perfect pairing at the Cabbagetown Chomp and Stomp, which meshes a competitive chili cook-off with live bluegrass music for the sixth year running. In order to better understand this fortuitous mashup of culinary and aural euphoria (not to mention a morning 5k run), Paste got some more details from John Dirga, music coordinator for this year's Chomp, in a recent email exchange.
