This time one year ago, Cults were an unsigned indie-rock duo with a seven-inch to their name. This release, which featured what would become the biggest single to date “Go Outside,” catapulted the New York-based duo into a whirlwind of a year.
Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin’s project ended up receiving an offer from Columbia Records on the strength of just four released songs. The band’s meteoric rise, fueled by blog speculation and hype surrounding the once-mysterious act, propelled them to release their eponymous debut record to much acclaim.
Cults recently performed in Atlanta, Ga., opening for fellow indie rock breakouts Foster The People. I spent an afternoon with the duo behind the scenes of this tour stop. Check out photos from the group’s soundcheck, a quick photo shoot and inside their bus—where I showed them an artist who performed a Cults cover at a recent Live From Paste session.
