New Orleans Jazz Festival 2013 - John Boutte

New Orleans Jazz Festival 2013 - John Boutte

The overflow crowd inside the Jazz Tent at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival rose to its feet as soon as it heard the rubbery acoustic bass figure that opens the credits for every episode to HBO’s Treme. It’s the introduction to “Treme Song,” written and sung by John Boutte, who was standing by on stage. A short, bearded man in an oversize white shirt and baggy pants, Boutte slapped his tambourine and began to sing about his neighborhood, “Hangin’ in the Treme, watching people sashay, past my steps, by my porch, in front of my door.” Soon audience...  read more

New Orleans Jazz Festival 2013: Thursday - Widespread Panic, Theresa Andersson

New Orleans Jazz Festival 2013: Thursday - Widespread Panic, Theresa Andersson

The trouble with a band like Widespread Panic is that if you’re at all familiar with jazz, the band’s improvisations are not that impressive. And if the band’s not getting over on the strength of its solos, it has to rely on the more conventional qualities of pop music—singing, songwriting and rhythm—and those aren’t so impressive either. It’s not that Widespread’s musicians are incompetent in any of these areas; it’s that they’re not exceptional at any of them. The sextet played a two-and-a-half-hour set, nearly twice as long as any other set at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival...  read more

New Orleans Jazz Festival 2013: The Threadheads

New Orleans Jazz Festival 2013: The Threadheads

Most crowd-funding efforts are reactive. Artists propose a project—either through their own webpage or through a company such as Kickstarter or PledgeMusic—and audiences either respond or don’t. But the Threadheads have taken an unusual, proactive approach: The fans are the ones who take the initiative and the artists either respond or don’t. These fans of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival have created their own record company to enable their favorite Louisiana artists to make new albums. The Threadheads have also created their own live-music party between the festival’s two weekends and have booked all the bands themselves every...  read more
