Amidst the growing excitement for Sunday’s Golden Globe’s and the pending announcement of the Academy Award nominations, some of the biggest Oscar contenders strolled the red carpet for The National Board of Reviews gala. The ceremony, which was held at the famous Cipriani’s in New York honored the buzzed about talents from this year’s formidable films in cinema. On Monday, Rufus Wainwright played a sold-out show in the beautiful Les Folies Bergère theater in Paris, and his beautiful voice filled the venue. Charming the audience between songs with better French than most North American acts, Wainwright didn’t have to try nearly as hard to win everyone over but he did and he succeeded. From his eccentric outfit by Jean-Paul Gaultier to the well-honed renditions of his songs, he was a spectacle in all of the best ways.... read more
A Day In The Life: Stars
Halfway through their European tour, Canadian band Stars played for a passionate crowd at La Maroquinerie in Paris, France. Despite near-constant touring since early September, these rock veterans showed no signs of the road. Before starting the show, band members explored the neighborhood, stepping into a small bar for wine and calvados. Stars brought their well-honed music and stage presence to an excited crowd of expats and local parisians. Fans in the front row could be seen reaching out to frontman Torquil Campbell and stared in breathless excitement. Between her standout album Tramp, a seemingly constant touring schedule and an ever-growing list of all-star collaborators, Sharon Van Etten has had a whirlwind of a year. Van Etten seems to make every performance particularly endearing with her friendly, conversational banter between songs and her willingness to share parts of her life. For her show in Chicago, Ill., Van Etten opened up to her fans in a different way by allowing Paste photographer Josh Darr to follow her as she prepped for her performance at Lincoln Hall. On the first song of Japandroids’ sold-out show at Firebird in St. Louis, Mo., drummer David Prowse broke his kick pedal in half. This proved to be an accurate predictor of how hard they would play the rest of the show as Prowse and guitarist Brian King ripped through a set that heavily featured tracks from their recent release Celebration Rock. They also dusted off some songs from their first two EPs as an apology for having not been in St. Louis for so many years. Openers Swearin’ managed to pack 16 songs into their half-hour opening slot.
