Three Reasons to Watch $5 Cover, the New MTV Show Created by Hustle & Flow Director Craig Brewer, According to the Man Himself
Next summer, if we are lucky, Memphis-based director Craig Brewer will start shooting Mother Trucker, a feature film based on a true story about a guy who breaks out of the pokey to see his sick mama, and winds up stealing not only a Wal-Mart tractor trailer but Crystal Gale’s frigging tour bus along the way. ... read more
Behind the Scenes at Paste's Decemberists Cover Shoot
The day that The Decemberists gathered at Portland's Newspace Studios to get all dolled up and shot for Paste's May cover by Chris Hornbecker and his crew, no one could believe the weather. After months of sporadic blizzarding and general wintertime malaise in the Rose City, the sun was shining, the mercury was inching up towards 55 and shirt-sleeves were getting gleefully rolled up all over the place. "It was snowing this time last week!" one dumbfounded PA exclaimed, standing out in the parkinglot, squinting up at the cloudless sky. ... read more

Five Amazing Albums in My iTunes You've Never Heard Of
Since Wired editor Chris Anderson wrote his book a few years ago, there's been a lot of talk about "The Long Tail" from a business perspective. But the truth of the music business is that the cream doesn't always rise to the top. Hidden among those thousands of albums available at iTunes and Amazon that sell in the low thousands—or even hundreds—of records are little treasures that just escaped our collective notice. Ranging from the completely obscure to the fairly obscure, these are albums I've fallen in love with over the years that, for whatever reason, didn't get the widespread... read more

Five Teen Movies That Should Be Musicals
With the news that Heathers is about to adapted to a musical, that American Psycho is heading to Broadway, and even Green Day getting the musical treatment for their American Idiot album, it seems that audiences are craving more music in their lives from the characters they already love. As many cringe with the thought of their favorite childhood characters dancing across a stage, it is hard not to wonder about the other teen movies that should get the musical treatment and hope for the best. Here are five teen movies (among the many) that should be musicals:... read more
Seven Must-Listen This American Life Episodes
A week and a half ago, a friend and I braved the sprawly horrors of Atlanta's Hollywood 24 to see the live broadcast of This American Life's second-annual live show. Up in New York City, host Ira Glass sat at a desk before a crowd of hundreds, as thousands more sat in movie theater seats across the country and beheld the very odd phenomenon transpiring before us. This American Life has had great success as both a radio program and a television series, and though it translated rather awkwardly to the stage (when do we clap? why does Ira look... read more
Songs to Do Nothing To: The Motion Picture Soundtrack to Lazy
Guess who’s feeling unmotivated? This guy! Sometimes, though, it’s fun to channel an apathetic mood into something productive. A soundtrack to lazy, as it were. The key here is to ignore what the song is actually about (listening requires motivation), choosing instead to base its inclusion off the title alone. Have a look at the list below (which I’m capping at 15, since any more than that would be too much work), click where applicable to hear the track and feel free to post your favorite lethargic lyrics, tired tunes, melodies of malaise and sleepy song choices in the comments.... read more
20 Totally Awesome Fictional Bands Inspired by the Swine Flu
I know, I know... this list could come back to bite me in the ass. But after the Bird Flu and all the other would-be pandemics of the last decade, I'm willing to take that chance. The best way to sum up how I feel about the current Swine Flu hysteria is to quote the South Park SARS episode...... read more
Ten Things You Should Know Before Becoming a Drug Dealer
Breaking Bad is the best thing that’s happened to AMC since, um, Mad Men. Not only is the plotline fascinating (high-school chemistry teacher finds out he has lung cancer and starts cooking meth to pay medical bills for himself and baby on the way), but also it’s full of great tips and warnings for Future Drug Dealers. Thinking of going into the business? Take heed: ... read more

You Talkin' to Me? A Survey of Songs by Musicians, About Other Musicians
It's nice when musicians sing songs about other musicians. The phenomenon would seem to compound the sense that pop stars are only interested in their own insular world, but instead it somehow makes artists seem more human—it proves that even they are obsessed with other musicians, just like we are. Hearing a pop song by one artist about another artist is sort of like reading someone else's fan mail (or hate mail). In any case, it can be revealing both about the artist giving the tribute and the artist on the receiving end. Here are some good ones.... read more
Bob Dylan, the Lazy Rhyme, and the Sublime
For the past seven hundred years, poets have been rhyming love with dove, moon with June, girl with curl, and boy with joy. Certain rhymes are so convenient and appropriate that their use had already become stale by the mid 1700s.-- Stephen Fry, from The Ode Less Travelled: Unlocking the Poet WithinThat big fat moon is gonna shine like a spoonWe’re gonna let it-- Bob Dylan, Poet of a Generation, “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight” ... read more
50 Best Bob Dylan Covers of All Time
As we began to compile this list of the 50 Best Bob Dylan Covers of All Time—asking for input from Paste readers, writers and editors—someone suggested that it might be easier to compile a list of artists who haven't covered Dylan. I've listened to literally hundreds of Dylan covers over the course of the past week, trying to weigh choices like, "Who's version of 'Tomorrow Is a Long Time' is better, Nick Drake or Nickel Creek?" But I don't mean to make it sound like grueling work. My biggest take-away from this exercise is that going to Dylan for source... read more

Six Frozen Treats to Stockpile for Summer
Friday was the first day since early last fall that the air conditioner kicked on in the Paste office, which means—well, it could mean that it's just another day in January, what with how wacky Atlanta weather gets, but in this case it's a sure sign that the hazy days of spring are fully here and that summer is just around the corner. Warm weather is great for so many reasons, obviously, but right now I'm most excited about being able to eat ice cream without having to throw on another sweater to counter-act the ensuing chill. (Not that it's... read more

18 Holes of Caddyshack: The Greatest Lines from the Greatest Golf Movie Ever Made
The last few weeks have been big for golf fans. First, an exciting finish to the Masters Tournament, in which Argentinian Angel Cabrera bested Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell in a three-way playoff. Then, last Friday, actor/comedian Bill Murray—revered by golf afficionados for his hilarious performance in the film Caddyshack—hooked a shot at a golf tournament in Florida and nearly knocked spectator Gayle DiMaggio unconscious. She made it through with a few stitches, and was excited to meet Murray, who gets major points for personally coming to check on her and then proceeding to bust a charming improv-comedy routine... read more
