Five Fantastic Songs Missing from The Pitchfork 500
Today, Pitchfork will release a book, printed on actual paper. The tome is called The Pitchfork 500: Our Guide to the Greatest Songs from Punk to the Present, and it is billed as containing "all-new essays and reviews written with the sharp wit and insight for which the site is known." A list like this practically begs for argument, and so it made sense to create a list of amazing songs that Pitchfork forgot. read more

Calexico - 11/4/08 - Cave Creek, AZ
Bus driver Jason Yakel is at a bar and receives an unexpected call from Calexico tour manager, Joe Puleo. Jason answers a little confused and a little buzzed, "I just got off the road with Death Cab For Cutie and I'm scheduled to pick up Calexico tomorrow?!"Joe replies, "If that's cool with you." [the phone goes dead for 30 seconds] Jason asks, "Can I call you right back?" ... read more
The 12 Best TV Theme Songs from Current Shows
Next Monday we'll look at the Best TV Theme Songs of All Time. But while we lament the lack of a Cheers or M*A*S*H or Sanford & Son theme song in today's TV landscape, we've picked our 12 favorite theme songs from TV shows that are still in production. In the era of TiVo, the little ditties opening today's shows seem to be littler and dittier than their predecessors (I guess if people are going to fast forward through them anyway, why spend the effort?). But here are 12 that make us put down that remote:[note: Sesame Street would have... read more
PaMaDoCoBloNaBloPoMoMo 2008, Day 9: Gretch-A-Sketch knows her ABCs
Gretchen of Gretch-A-Sketch, today's "G"-named NaBloPoMo blog, is tackling her month o' posting with a familiar strategy: Using the alphabet a means of inspiration and a way to keep her on track. It seems to be working for her, and it's working for me, too, except when I almost forgot Friday. And when I almost forgot today. (Though if you're thinking I did forget yesterday, nope! I rounded up the top 7 worst movie birthdays ever over our List of the Day blog. Phew, right?) ... read more
The 11 Best TV on the Radio Songs of All Time (Right Now)
Travis Morrison used to post his "favorite songs of all time (right now)" on the official website of his band, The Dismemberment Plan (RIP), and I always kinda loved the idea. After all, what are lists of favorites if not, so very often, ever-changing animals? Keeping that in mind, and keeping also in mind that it's well documented that I've been fairly obsessed with TV on the Radio ever since the band began releasing music in 2003, I thought this an appropriate contribution to our (semi-)newly minted List of the Day blog.... read more
Top 7 Worst Movie Birthdays Ever
[Above: Samantha Baker's birthday ended happily in Sixteen Candles, but overall was a classic mess.] Today is my birthday! Even though I plan on having a great day (The Everybodyfields last night, Of Montreal tonight, plus the church across the street from my apartment is having a huge yard sale today! I love yard sales!), I've had a few crappy birthdays in the past. But who hasn't? People who don't have birthdays, that's who. And those people are not alive people. So thank your lucky stars that you are an alive person having a birthday. Even if it's a crappy one,... read more
In which Birdmonster applauds America, shames California, and goes to Hooters. Everybody wins
Well done, America. A few months ago, you had me worried. Despite the selection of an aggressively ignorant rube as his running mate, Jowls McCain was leading in many major polls and I left for tour fearing unmitigated badness. However, our economy, a leaning Jenga tower when we departed, kept swaying, swayed further, and, while it didn't quite topple, the financial atmosphere last week felt like that Jenga tower but after somebody let a toddler high on Vault Cola and Pixie Stix into the room. Which is to say: precarious. ... read more
PaMaDoCoBloNaBloPoMoMo 2008, Day 7: F is for Future House Farm

Top 5 Not-So-Thinly-Veiled Sexual References to the Male Genitalia in Classic Blues and R&B
American blues and R&B are infamous for countless reasons, subtlety generally not being one of them. Here are some classic examples, many of which have been ripped off by more than a few longhaired rock 'n' rollers. But I won't mention any names (Robert Plant!). ... read more
Time Demolishers: Second Rate Snacks, Album Atlas and How To Nail Jello To a Wall

PaMaDoCoBloNaBloPoMoMo 2008, Day 6: Ezra Pound Cake is exactly what I hoped it would be but thought it wouldn't be!
Belgianwaffle is chugging right along with its chronicle of every place the author's ever lived, but it's still not a food blog. And despite my earlier promise, my lunches have remained steadily pathetic. Guess not everything needs to change in one week, right? Still, I'm feeling like some more inspired meals may be in my future, because today I successfully stumbled upon an actual food blog in my perusing of NaBloPoMo's "E"-name blogs, one that I clicked on with the assumption that I was about to be disappointed, once again, by a site cleverly but irrelevantly named. Ezra Pound Cake,... read more

PaMaDoCoBloNaBloPoMoMo 2008, Day 5: Distractible Jane airs her regrets
Dear Distractible Jane,Your blog entry today made me chuckle. I was too nervous to drink last night-- I had just one Strongbow (and some of Twain's curry chicken salad, which I was also too riled up to finish at the time, but which I've been intensely craving the picked-over remainders of all day)-- but I kind of regret not sharing your day-after regrets. There was just so much to celebrate! It would have been the best worst morning of my life. Instead, it was just one of best best mornings. Less hung-over but equally proud,-RachaelPS: For those just getting in on the PaMaDoCoBloNaBloPoMoMo action, here's some more information on the project. ... read more
