The 25 Best American Breweries of the Decade (2000-2009)

Despite making nothing but the worst mass-produced horse swill for the half-century that followed Prohibition, the U.S. is now the greatest nation on earth when it comes to beer.  read more

Lou Barlow and Dinosaur Jr. Tour Diary - Boulder, CO - 10/29/09

Wake to a bus disturbance. It seems a wheel nearly shimmed off while we were in route. We are on the side of the highway (I-76), it is sleeting and the smokers are out smoking in the breakdown lane. Murph is wandering on the frontage road attached to his cell phone (I worry that he’ll be hit by a speeding pickup truck; he’s occasionally oblivious to traffic.) We congregate in the front lounge and have a pretty good time considering we are stranded. Dead Man (Jim Jarmusch film with Johnny Depp) is on the DVD player and we appreciate Neil...  read more

Paste's Pop Goes the Culture Streaming Online (Awesome of the Day)

From the shameless self-promotion file, new network Halogen TV is now streaming Paste magazine’s TV pilot Pop Goes the Culture, which you can watch in its 42-minute glory below. Watch me tower like some third-string NBA player over Janelle Monaé as we walk through the streets of Austin talking about her burgeoning career. See the equally lanky Bradford Cox from Deerhunter answer probing questions on our psychiatrist’s couch. And listen to Passion Pit get the crowd dancing. And let Halogen TV know what you think on the Pop Goes The Culture webpage at HalogenTV.com....  read more

The 10 Best Casual Games of the Decade (2000-2009)

They're called casual games because they have relatively straightforward rules and don't typically require the brow-furrowed commitment of so-called hardcore game titles. But don't be fooled. Just because a game might only last three minutes...  read more

Lou Barlow and Dinosaur Jr. Tour Diary - Omaha, NE - 10/27/09

The building complex for the club (The Slowdown) contains an Urban Outfitters, an American Apparel and the offices of Saddle Creek records, among other left of the dial businesses. San Fransisco Panorama: McSweeney's New Newspaper (Awesome of the Day)

Part of the beauty of subscribing to McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern is never knowing what to expect. This December, Issue 33 of Dave Eggers’ literary journal will be in the form of an ancient delivery system for news, analysis and the funny papers—a newspaper. The one-off broadsheet, called the San Francisco Panorama will feature 32 pages of news, 24 pages of sports, 16 pages of comics and 16 pages of food, all on high-quality newsprint in an apparent effort to rub the noses of newspaper men and women across the nation in what they’ve lost....  read more

Jesco White and Hank Williams IIIThe Wild and Wonderful Whites of West VirginiaYou can have Jon and Kate, the Osbournes or the Kardashians. I'll take the Whites of Boone County, West Virginia for pure reality entertainment. Produced by the "Jackass" MTV folks the documentary follows these modern day hillbillies with their bent for crime. They make the Gotti mob look like the Osmonds.  Openly using and selling drugs, milking the government entitlement system and maybe worst of all, giving their kids names like Cheyan and Tylor. Hank Williams III contributes some tunes with "Punch Fight Fuck!" being the appropriate theme song. Downtown CallingDowntown...  read more

Sitges Film Festival 2009: A Q&A with Tom Six About His Barf-Bag Classic, The Human Centipede

Every year at the Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic in Sitges, Spain, there’s one movie that generates instant notoriety. In previous years, gore-drenched European shockers like Inside and Martyrs have prompted more than gasps from audiences. People flee the theater, get sick to their stomachs, even require a trip to the emergency room. Or so goes the legend....  read more

Recycled Cassette Tape Necktie (Awesome of the Day)

Alyce Santoro and Julio Cesar have found a use for all those old cassettes taking up space in our attics—turn the magnetic into fabric and make lovely neckties. This half-thread/half-tape combination is “actually audible if you run a tape head over it,” according to Santoro, the founder of the Center for the Improbable & (Im)permacultural Research, and the recording on the tie is off her album of found street sounds called Between Stations she recorded in New York before moving to West Texas....  read more

TV Soundtrack Award: Stargate Universe Episode 107 ("Earth")

The latest show in the Stargate franchise is starting to really find its footing, as tensions rise between the castaways aboard the Destiny, and their bosses back on Earth. But the real highlight in the show’s latest episode was an appearance from Paste favorite and Atlanta rising star Janelle Monáe. Two of the ships’ younger passengers, Chloe and Eli, made a virtual trip back to earth that included one of Monáe’s stunning concerts. It’s fitting since her debut EP Metropolis featured a futuristic cyborg on the run....  read more
