New York psych-rockers Cymbals Eat Guitars have been paying homage to ‘90s indie rock for several years now, but you can really hear the influence of bands like Pavement and Built To Spill in the band’s newest LP, Lenses Alien. The album, which comes out Sept. 6 via Barsuk, moves the band’s sound in a darker and moodier direction, opening up with the 8-minute prog-rock track, “Rifle Eyesight (Proper Name).”

But Lenses Alien still features the catchy melodic tracks and nonsensical lyrics the band is known for, such as in the upbeat track “Shore Points” and in the lead single, “Definite Darkness.” In these tracks, you’ll hear that same solid songwriting and raw edginess that defined the band’s debut album Why There Are Mountains.

Look out for Cymbals Eat Guitars in your city as they head out on a North American tour starting at the end of this month. As for now, check out a full stream of the album here in the player below.
