Kathleen Edwards Discusses Her New Album Voyageur
“I didn’t want to be this four-chord acoustic singer songwriter because that stuff just got so old to me,” songwriter Kathleen Edwards said about recording her new album, Voyageur. “People are really set in their ways in how they produce records, and I was at least open enough to where I knew I wanted to do something totally different.”
Maybe that’s where Edwards gets the title for her latest single, “Change the Sheets,” a track that feels both familiar and fresh coming from the songwriter. The end result — a keyboard-driven, lean and immediate track — is the product of Edwards cutting the fat from the track, which still sound familiar to Edwards’ fans.
The album was co-produced by Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, who said he wanted to help Edwards refine her sound while staying true to her roots.
“As a fan, I wanted to make sure (I helped) make this fourth record not a complete departure, yet definitely marking a new era in her songs,” Vernon said about working with Edwards. “She’s ready to step out of some of the boxes people placed her in, not necessarily the ones she placed herself in.”
Voyageur will be in stores on January 17—watch her album trailer as well as listen to “Change The Sheets” below.
