Video Premiere: Rich Aucoin - "P.U.S.H."
Rich Aucoin wears his influences proudly. The Canadian synth-dance-pop newcomer welcomes comparisons to Girl Talk and Dan Deacon. His last video for “It” (that we also premiered) paid homage to iconic films such as Ghostbusters, Die Hard, Top Gun and Forrest Gump. And in his latest video for “P.U.S.H.,” Aucoin seems to pay homage to childhood cartoons while telling “The Myth of the Robo Wonder Kid.”
While director, producer and animator Joel MacKenzie has worked on shows like Cartoon Network’s George of the Jungle, National Geographic Kids’ AquaTeam and BBC Kids’ Big Bear and Squeak, his graphics for “P.U.S.H.” look more like what would happen if the Powerpuff Girls aired during Adult Swim.
The video for “P.U.S.H.,” er, “The Myth of the Robo Wonder Kid,” is adorable in the same way as Disney movies: the subliminal messages and mild suggestiveness are veiled by heartwarming, youthful animation and storytelling. Like any good story, this one, too, ends happily ever after.
